That happened a month or so back. It was a big deal for a while.
Basically, there were some issues of persons wanting money from Jalopnik because their copyrighted stuff was being used on Oppo, and apparently people were claiming to be Jalopnik writers and proving it with Oppo articles- a completely shady and deplorable tactic that I wish I had thought of.

AFAIK it wasn’t so much Jalopnik/Oppo related as it was a kinjawide shift. Lots of other subblogs transitioned off of the main property URL (Jalopnik) and into a kinja domain, as we are now.
Hackerspace, for example. Not necessarily a punitive action on all counts - http://hackerspace.kinja.com/the-separation…
I can’t speak to the specific reasons for this but I know there were some things like what you mentioned going on with other subblogs. But again I don’t think this decision was centered around Oppo entirely.

I’m going off of what I heard in the murmurs that followed. I can’t remember if the copyright thing was from another user or from Oppo’s version of the separation post.

Can't say I've noticed. Strange indeed.

As an avid rock climber, I’d buy a place like that in a heartbeat. Free in-home climbing gym!

The copyright thing was from io9. An o-deck commenter got promoted to weekend duty on io9 and immediately copy/pasted a Cracked article. That didn’t end well, but as I understand it was also not the sole reason for the mass kinjization.
But I did hear that some Oppo people were trying to pass themselves off as Jalopnik writers to get access to things/places. I can’t actually personally confirm this but at the same time it doesn’t surprise me.
It’s hard to know all the details, and sometimes all we get are the murmurs, but I can’t blame Gawker for limiting their liability wherever possible. Especially because nothing has really changed for us except the URL.
